We Didn’t Bring the Boys….to Nashville

Four years ago, almost to the day, we took a trip to Nashville to see one of our favorite bands, Young the Giant. We had such a great time that we said if the band ever went back to Nashville, we would too.            So here we are!

We took an early morning flight on Thursday and even with a delay got in around 10:30 in the morning. My coworker, turned travel agent, booked us a room at The Westin Nashville. It was in such a great location and the room was clean, cold, and had a big fluffy bed. That’s pretty much my main checkpoints for a hotel. Luckily our room was ready and we were able to check in at 11 even though check in wasn’t supposed to be until 4. Score! We were hungry so we made the quick walk to Nash House Southern Spoon & Saloon for some famous hot chicken, because why not? It was so good! I got the mild and it still burned my mouth. I’m from the south, I thought I was supposed to be able to handle spice! After lunch, I’m ashamed to say we took a nap. Well, maybe I’m not ashamed. We have two wild little boys at home, we earned that nap! I had tried to book massages at the spa a few weeks prior and everything was booked, but we walked down just to double check availability and they had two open back to back spots. It was meant to be. I have gotten many massages but never really took advantage of the other spa amenities because we usually have places to go after. But on this day, I did it all! I got my massage, drank a mimosa in the relaxation room, sat in the sauna, took a steam shower, used all the free products, even blow dried my hair. It was wonderful and I plan to fully utilize every spa from here on out. The massage was just the rest and relaxation we needed before a night out on Broadway. We hit up L27 on the Westin’s rooftop for a drink and snack before we made the walk to Broadway. It was about a 10 minute walk down and then back up a hill, so if you stay at the Westin be prepared for that! Our first stop was Tootsies, of course. We had so much fun there last time that we had to go back! After tootsies we walked the strip listening for the next place we wanted to go. We spent the rest of the night at Lucky Bastard Saloon listening to McKayla and Runaway Magnolia- and by rest of the night I mean we were in bed by 10:30.

We planned for Friday to be a pool day. We actually chose the Westin because it was one of the only hotels in the city with a rooftop pool. We grabbed coffee at Honest Coffee Roasters which was just one street over from the hotel! I’m a sucker for a pretty latte. After coffee we headed up to the pool. I have to admit, the pool looked much larger online than it was in person, and there wasn’t really any where to lounge. If you want to lounge by a pool in Nashville, I suggest the JW Marriot. We could see their pool from the rooftop of ours and were a little jealous! The good news is we met some pretty cool people and found a spot to sit in this tiny pool, so all was good. Around 2:30 we were done with the pool and headed over for a drink at Ole Red with our new friends. It was quite fun to watch the people around complain about the heat and humidity, I wanted to say “don’t be a wuss”. Just Kidding! I wanted to say Louisiana is ten times worse than this us. It actually felt pretty cool and breezy to us. Maybe we are just conditioned to the heat. After hanging out on the rooftop of Ole Red we headed to the The Twelve Thirty Club for an early dinner before the concert. It was delicious! Delicious! And I’m not just saying that because it’s owned by my childhood crush Justin Timberlake. The food was phenomenal, the service was great, The Beauty School Dropout drink I had was probably the best I’ve had in Nashville thus far. The club is cool because it’s three stories and there is a different restaurant on each floor. We ate at the Honky Tonk, which was on the first floor. We had a great seat right in front of the stage and honestly I could have sat there all night. Highly recommend! Just make sure you make reservations on their website in advance, it fills up quick and now I know why. After dinner we walked to the Ascend Amphitheater for the concert. Both opening acts were great and Young the Giant somehow gets better each time! Prior to coming everyone looked at me crazy when I said we were going see Young the Giant in Nashville. They all assumed it was a big country star we were coming to see. These guys are awesome and if you haven’t heard their music do yourself a favor and go listen!  We had great seats on the end of the third row, it felt like we were at an exclusive concert instead of one with thousands of people. We may just keep up this tradition of seeing Young the Giant each time they come to Nashville.

On Saturday we awoke to rain but we were determined to make the best of our last day. We ubered to a place called Layer Cake for breakfast. We could have walked but it was raining. The friends we met in the pool told us about it the day before so we wanted to give it a try. It must be a popular place because the hostess said they were completely booked for the day but we were able to sit at the bar top! I had the most delicious avocado toast(pretty sure I have an avocado toast addiction) and my very own mini cake, FOR BREAKFAST! This was definitely the hot spot for bachelorette parties, they had a new one come in every 5 minutes. After that we visited Barstool Sports, it’s the newest spot downtown and it was real cool. We had planned to get some tickets for the Music City Brew Hop and take the trolly around to a few breweries but they were sold out. So we decided to use the Bird scooters and do our own tour. We hit up Marble Fox Brewing, Tennessee Brew Works, and YeeHaw Brewing. YeeHaw was definitely our favorite! It was connected to the Ole Smokey Moonshine distillery and had such a cool vibe. We had a few tacos from White Duck Taco and they were so good. We ended the night at L27 again on the roof of the Westin and binged some Netflix in the room. How do you know that your getting older? When you make sure you are in bed at a decent time on your last night instead of whooping it up.

We love Nashville and are already planning our return, either with Young the Giant or maybe a Saints vs. Titans game in a few years. Our kid free trips wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful parents. We are so thankful for Mawmaw and Pop who made our time away fun for our boys.  It is now their turn for a well deserved nap :)

We Brought the Boys… to Houston, again!

We brought the boys to Houston for a quick little weekend getaway. This is our second documented trip to Houston with the kids but we’ve been quite a few times. This was also our first road trip without electronics since we took them away. We had to get creative to pass the time so we created a license plate game, made a snack box, and brought a few activity books! It was a much more pleasant drive than I anticipated!       Our first stop of the trip was The Woodlands for the boys first concert. We arrived at  The Westin , always my hotel of choice, and headed to the pool to pass the time until the concert that night. We got about an hour of swim time in before the sky fell out so we went inside and had a late lunch so the weather could pass. Around 5 we made the walk to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion to see Young the Giant and Cage the Elephant. The boys jam out to Young the Giant in Branden’s truck so I was excited to see their reaction to the band in person. They did not d

We Brought the Boys….to Winter Park

After going to Winter Park last spring break, my sister in law and brother in law extended an invitation for us to join them this year. We were a little hesitant at first to bring a 4 and 6 year old on the slopes but we decided we were up for the challenge!      We had a direct flight from New Orleans to Denver on Easter Sunday. While we hated to miss the holiday with our family, we lucked out with slim airport crowds!       We took a Home James shuttle from the airport to the resort! The shuttle was clean, the driver was friendly, and he even stopped to get us a good burger before we ventured out into the mountains. He dropped us off at our condo, Founder’s Pointe. All props go to my sister in law for finding this place when she came last year. It was the perfect location! You could walk to the busses to go into town and walk to the village and ski lift. She also had the great idea to get a floor level room so that we didn’t have to lug our gear up the stairs everyday. Way to g

We Didn’t Bring the Boys….to Wiscaaansin

Our 5th annual Saints trip is in the books and this year we went to Wisconsin (Wiscaaansin according to the locals). I can’t lie, I was not excited about this one. I just didn’t know what there would be to do in Wisconsin besides the game and I definitely come on these football trips for the Saturdays. The day we usually go exploring a new city. When searching for an AirBnB, I came across a description that said the location was perfect for a day trip to Door County. Once I looked into Door County, my excitement level changed.      We flew into Milwaukee because it was hundreds of dollars cheaper than flying into Green Bay. Luckily, our friends flew in the night before and picked us up in their rental car to make the drive together to Green Bay. It was a pretty drive, lots of open hills and farms. The best part, real fall colors! I didn’t know seeing red and yellow leaves could make me so excited. After a nearly two hour drive and a stop to get groceries, we made it to the most perfe
