What does any sane person do two weeks out from a big trip? Well, they plan another spontaneous spur of the moment trip of course. This one was courtesy of our buddy Randy, who sent out a group text asking if anyone wanted to go to an Astros game. My husband immediately jumped on board and before I knew it, we packed up the kids plus two other buddies and hit the road to Texas. The Astros game was all we had planned but you know this girl had to take advantage of every minute in a new city. This wasn’t our first trip to Houston, but it was the first with the boys. After seeing some pictures from friends who went to Houston a few weeks prior, I knew immediately what our first stop would be, The Color Factory.
It was a fun experience. I loved that they had cameras set up everywhere to capture selfies and that you got to download all of your pictures for free at the end of the exhibit. The kids really loved the treats; macaroons, taffy, and black ice cream. Branden loved the ball pit. Who am I kidding, we all loved the ball pit. It brought back 90’s McDonalds memories for sure. It took us about an hour to walk through the entire thing. It was cool, I’m glad we did it, but I can’t say that we will be back.
When we finished at the Color Factory we headed over to check into our hotel, Hilton Americas, and change for the game. We stay here each time we visit Houston and have never been disappointed. Check in didn’t take much time and containing two excited boys to a hotel room is not my idea of a good time, so we headed out to Discovery Green to get some energy out.The kids discovered a park as well as a giant hill that they rolled down for at least 45 minutes. Honestly, they would have been happy rolling down that hill for the rest of the day. Why do we spend money to take them places when a hill is all they need?
Soon it was time for the snacks, I mean the game. I honestly don’t know how long we would have lasted if not for the snacks. We sat in right field and it was a little too far away from the action for a 3 and 6 year old. Don’t get me wrong, we had a great time but by the 5th inning I could see them getting antsy. We left in just enough time to walk back to our hotel before the meltdown from the tired 3 year old began.
The next morning we woke up with brunch on the mind (but brunch is always on my mind). My husband did a quick search and we ended up at Leeland House. I’m a sucker for a fancy coffee, a cool atmosphere, and some fluffy pancakes and this place had it all. It’s a few minutes drive from downtown but worth it in my opinion.
Overall it was a nice, quick trip. The boys had a great time at their first MLB game and we continue to enjoy experiencing “firsts” through their eyes!
